How to Transport a Cake Home Safely

A practical guide to getting your cake home in one piece after pickup: where to put it in the car, dealing with heat, and moving tiered cakes.

How to Transport a Cake Home Safely

A custom cake is finished, boxed, and ready — and the only thing between it and your celebration is the drive home. This is the part people worry about most, and for good reason: a beautiful cake can be undone by one sharp brake or a tilted seat. The good news is that transporting a cake safely is straightforward once you know the rules. Here is how to get yours home in perfect shape.

The one rule: keep it flat

A cake should always travel on a flat, level surface. The single most common mistake is putting the box on a passenger seat. Car seats are sloped and curved, so the cake leans, slides, and presses against one side of the box. The flattest place in most cars is the floor behind the front seats. Put the boxed cake there, on a non-slip mat or a folded towel so it cannot slide around.

Before you leave the studio

  • Make sure the cake is in a proper box with the lid closed.
  • Check the box is sitting flat in the car before you set off.
  • In warm weather, cool the car down with the air conditioning first.
  • Plan your route to avoid the bumpiest roads and the longest delays.

Driving with a cake

Drive as if there is a full glass of water on the seat next to you:

  • Brake and accelerate gently and early.
  • Take corners slowly — this is where cakes lean and smudge.
  • Go over speed bumps and potholes at walking pace.
  • Keep the drive as short and direct as you can.

Heat is the enemy

Pristina summers are hot, and heat is harder on a cake than any pothole. Buttercream softens, fillings warm, and decorations can slip. To protect the cake:

  • Run the air conditioning during the whole drive.
  • Never leave the cake in a parked car in the sun, even for a few minutes.
  • In high summer, pick the cake up as close to the event time as possible rather than hours ahead.

Once you arrive, the same care applies to keeping it fresh — see our guide on storing a cake.

Transporting a tiered cake

Tiered cakes are heavier, taller, and less forgiving. For short, careful drives we usually transport a small tiered cake fully assembled, kept cold and flat on the car floor. For longer journeys, very tall cakes, or wedding cakes travelling to a venue, we often box the tiers separately so they travel flat, then assemble them on site. If we are setting up at the venue, we handle this ourselves.

The key is to tell us your plan when you order. If you mention you are driving the cake 40 minutes to a village for a wedding, we prepare it very differently from a cake picked up for a dinner two streets away. Our wedding cake guide covers more on planning the day.

When to let us deliver

Most orders are picked up from our studio on Perandori Justinian in Pristina, and for many cakes that is the simplest option. But for larger cakes, tall tiered designs, and weddings, delivery and on-site setup take the stress off you completely. We can arrange local delivery within Pristina and setup at your venue with advance notice. If you are at all unsure about transporting a cake yourself, just ask — see our services page or get in touch.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I put a cake in the car?

On a flat surface, never on a seat. The car floor in the back is the flattest, most stable place — seats are sloped and bucket-shaped, which lets the cake slide and lean. Put a non-slip mat or a towel under the box so it does not move, and keep the air conditioning on in warm weather.

How do I transport a tiered cake?

For most tiered cakes we recommend transporting them assembled but only for short, careful drives, kept cold and flat on the car floor. For longer journeys or very tall cakes, we can box the tiers separately and give you simple instructions to stack them on site. Tell us your travel distance when you order and we will prepare the cake accordingly.

Do you deliver cakes in Pristina?

Most orders are picked up from our studio on Perandori Justinian in Pristina. For local deliveries within Pristina, and for larger wedding or corporate cakes, we can arrange drop-off and on-site setup with advance notice. Ask us when you place your order and we will tell you what is possible for your date.

What if the weather is hot on pickup day?

Heat is the main enemy of a cake in transit. Run the car air conditioning before you load the cake, keep the drive as short as possible, and never leave the cake in a parked car in the sun. If you have a long trip in summer, pick the cake up as close to the event as you can rather than hours ahead.
